Professional profile

I am a fully private consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Spire Hartswood hospital in Brentwood, Essex. I offer specialist private hip and knee surgery, foot and ankle surgery and general orthopaedic surgery in a clean and comfortable private Spire hospital.

My main interests are in the treatment of early arthritis of the knee and ankle; sports related injuries of the knee and ankle; arthroscopic (keyhole surgery) operations on the knee and ankle and personalised knee replacement surgery. In addition to total hip replacement surgery I also offer hip arthroscopy.

I have a particular interest in foot surgery and carry out ankle replacement surgery. I place enormous importance on rehabilitation following surgery and, to this end, run my own rehabilitation clinic.

Early in 2012 I introduced personalised knee replacement surgery at Spire Hartswood Hospital. In October 2012 I achieved another 'first' when one of my patients went home from The Hartswood less than 24 hours after her personalised knee replacement operation.

I regularly perform hip athroscopy at Spire Hartswood Hospital. This 'keyhole surgery' technique has advanced in recent years but is still not widely available, even in private hospitals. Hip arthroscopy allows the orthopaedic surgeon to visualise the inside of the hip joint and to repair cartilage damage. The cartilage rim of the hip joint socket may be torn and need trimming or repairing. Loose bodies can be removed and any irregularity in the shape of the femoral neck region can be smoothed off to reduce pain and improve mobility. Treatment by hip arthroscopy may reduce the chances of subsequently developing osteoarthritis and needing a hip replacement.

I qualified in medicine from the Royal London Hospital, Whitechapel in 1983. I was made a fellow at the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh in 1988 and awarded a knee fellowship at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore in 1989 . In 1995 I was made a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in the specialty of orthopaedic surgery. I was awarded a postgraduate diploma in biomechanics at the University of Strathclyde and a fellowship in knee surgery (specialising is sports surgery) at Duke University, North Carolina, USA. I was formerly a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Basildon and Thurrock NHS Trust and received a higher degree of Doctor of Medicine from Aberdeen University in 1996. I was appointed to The Court of Examiners of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2000.
