Vascular Disease Awareness Month

13 September 2017

Vascular disease can be caused due to the narrowing or clogging of the veins and arteries due to a build-up of fatty deposits. This makes day to day tasks difficult and moving around very painful for a sufferer. The disease tends to affect the legs, brain, arms or the heart.

This disease is common in people over the age of 60 affecting more men than women. There are many causes that could increase the risk of developing vascular disease such as smoking, diabetes, your diet and weight, high cholesterol and the disease can also be genetic. An interesting factor to take into consideration is your ethnic background - research believes that south Asian and African-Caribbean people living in the United Kingdom are at a higher risk than the rest of the population.

Changing your lifestyle will help you hugely when it comes down to treating this condition; exercising regularly and quitting smoking is the key to managing and preventing vascular disease.

What to look out for

Some of the warning signs for vascular disease include:

  • Blurred vision
  • Abdominal pain or back pain
  • Cramping, numbness or pain in the legs
  • Change in the colour of your legs
  • Hair loss or slower hair growth on legs
  • Slower growth of your toenails

However, it is important that you maintain a healthy lifestyle and are checked regularly, as 60% of suffers of vascular disease have no symptoms.

If you are concerned about vascular disease or would like some more information about prevention and treatment, come to Spire Harpenden Hospital to see our two specialist consultants Mr T Bhatti and Mr M Guest who deal with vascular issues on a day-to-day basis.
