Staff and patients of Spire Gatwick Park Hospital recently celebrated a significant milestone for its Weight Loss Clinic.
Opened 18 months ago at the hospital in Povey Cross Road, Horley, the clinic has just supported its 100th patient through surgery.
Consultant bariatric surgeon, Simon Monkhouse, and his specialist team joined patients for a party to mark the occasion.
“To have carried out 100 weight loss operations in such a short space of time highlights the commitment and dedication of the team, and the faith our patients have in this service,” he said. “Not only have all our patients lost weight, but more importantly they have each achieved personal victories that were not possible before surgery. Some have renewed their interest in hobbies and activities, while others have significantly reduced or even reversed medical conditions such as diabetes."
All prospective patients are assessed by the hospital’s multi-disciplinary team of surgeon, bariatric nurse, dietician and psychotherapist. Together they decide if the patient can proceed with surgery, and advise on the most suitable type of treatment. After surgery, patients are supported for two years by the weight loss team, and automatically become lifelong members of the weight loss support group which meets regularly.
The success of the clinic has led to an acceleration in the number of patients coming forward for surgery – more than 40% of the operations have been performed just in the last six months. At the one year anniversary mark in April this year, 58 people had lost a total of 127 stone and 4 lbs.
“Being obese puts a huge strain on your health, both mentally and physically," adds Mr Monkhouse. “Our patients are walking success stories of how weight loss surgery can change lives for the better. They have had to work very hard themselves, both before and after surgery, but they are supported with psychotherapy, dietary advice and the hands-on care of our amazing bariatric nurses.”
Spire Gatwick Park offers several different weight loss treatments and patients will be guided on the most suitable one for them by the multi-disciplinary team.
The UK has the highest obesity levels in Europe with more than 20% of the population now obese. Mr Monkhouse says Spire Gatwick Park’s work is not going to make a dent in the obesity levels of the nation “but we will make a massive difference to individuals”.
Weight loss surgery is not to be confused with cosmetic surgery. Instead, it is metabolic surgery with tangible health improvements in addition to the significant weight loss. For some patients, it can put diabetes into remission for good.
Free Patient Information Evenings on Weight Loss Surgery are held regularly at Spire Gatwick Park Hospital. These events are led by Mr Simon Monkhouse, and his team are on hand to answer questions. This usually includes Bariatric Nurse Specialist, Kay Wheeler, Psychotherapist, Sarah Wrigglesworth, and Consultant Dietician, Lucy Jones, who is also the consultant dietician on BBC’s recent series “Eat Well for Less”.
