At Spire Elland Hospital, our highly skilled consultants and expert aftercare team offer gastric bypass surgery to help you lose weight if severe obesity is affecting your health.
During a gastric bypass, your surgeon will reduce the size of your stomach and connect it to the lower part of your small intestine, restricting the calories you can eat and absorb.

Spire Elland Hospital is a long-established private hospital providing care to our patients across Halifax and the surrounding Yorkshire areas. We have a choice of bariatric surgeons (consultants specialising in weight loss surgery) who perform gastric bypass surgery to help you lose weight when diet and exercise haven’t worked. Your consultant will work alongside our dietitians and psychologists to ensure you get the right treatment and aftercare.
A dietitian will give you monthly support and is available on the phone if you have any questions between appointments.
It's a common operation to have done privately, and our inclusive prices and access to payment plans make it easy and more affordable, even if you don’t have medical insurance.

Your consultations
Your first appointment will take place in one of our 13 consulting rooms. Your consultant will discuss your medical history with you and explain your different options. There’ll be plenty of time to ask any questions. You’ll be able to talk about:
If you decide you’d like to go ahead with a gastric bypass, you’ll meet an anaesthetist and a psychologist so they can further assess if surgery is right for you. You'll also need to have a pre-operative assessment which may include:
Your gastric bypass surgery takes one to three hours, but you’ll stay in hospital for between two to five days afterwards. You’ll have a comfortable, private room with all the comforts and conveniences you’d expect to find at home, including:
On the day of your operation, there’ll be a chance to meet your anaesthetist and the surgical team. You’ll have a general anaesthetic for the operation, which involves your surgeon reducing the size of your stomach and connecting it to the lower part of your small intestine.
If you’ve come with a friend or family member, they’re welcome to wait in your private room while you have your operation.
After surgery, our nursing team will care for you and ensure you have adequate medication to help you deal with any discomfort from surgery.
Once you leave hospital, we’ll have follow-up appointments with you one month, three months and six months after your operation to check your recovery and progress. A dietitian will provide monthly support and is available over the phone should you need any advice or help outside of consultations.
