Podiatry is the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of foot and lower limb disorders, many of which are caused by general health disorders.

Feet on the sand

At Spire Dunedin Hospital, Mr David Cozens, consultant podiatric surgeon, specialises in the painful foot with special interest in the treatment of chronic heel pain, bunion and forefoot pain and biomechanical management of adult and paediatric acquired flexible flat foot deformity.

Most painful foot conditions can be treated by multiple approaches, therefore surgery may not be the only option. Mr Cozens performs both surgical and non-surgical treatments including:

  • Hallux valgus (bunion)
  • Hallux rigidus / limitus (painful stiff big toe)
  • Hammer / mallet toe deformity painful lesser toes, persistent corns or ulceration
  • Neuroma
  • Ganglion / cyst (lumps and bumps)
  • Metatarsal osteotomy (chronic overload, forefoot corns and callus)

  • Heel pain (plantar fasciitis)
  • Arch and forefoot pain
  • Injection therapy for joint pain
  • Biomechanics (functional orthoses)
  • Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT)
  • Ultrasound guided injection therapy
