Focus on the important things in life

12 March 2018

The ageing process, eye disease and long term conditions such as diabetes can all affect our eyesight. Although only a few conditions rob people of their sight, many – such as cataracts and glaucoma – make it much more difficult for us to read, drive, watch television and enjoy other everyday pleasures.

Our highly regarded consultants provide specialist care in all aspects of ophthalmology, tailored to individual needs, using state-of-the-art techniques. The treatments offered, such as cataract repair, can provide long-term and dramatic improvements to your eyesight – and boost your enjoyment of life.

The three most common conditions that can result in sight loss are treated in different ways. Blindness caused by cataracts is reversible with surgery, and at Spire Dunedin Hospital you will be offered the choice of a mono-focal, a multi-focal, or an accommodating lens. The choice of lens is dependent on your discussions with your consultant and your lifestyle.

Blindness caused by glaucoma is permanent but your remaining vision can be preserved and speed in treatment, once the condition has been diagnosed, is an important factor. Glaucoma often runs in families so it's particularly important to have regular eye health checks, if you have a family history.

Loss of sight can also be caused by two forms of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Testing for AMD is non-invasive and can be done using a retinal angiogram and a 3D scan. These will help diagnose the type and stage of the condition so that the best course of action can be determined. There is no cure for AMD but it’s important to remember that you can reduce your risk and retain an acceptable level of vision if you act early.

If you have been advised to see an ophthalmic surgeon by your GP or Optician, you can be assured your care will be tailored to you and you'll be able to book an appointment that suits you at Spire Dunedin Hospital. We offer interest free payment options to make treatment more affordable, so there’s no need to compromise on quality.

Your eyesight is arguably your most precious sense. If you are going to trust someone to perform eye surgery, you need to be sure you choose the right surgeon and the right hospital. Phone today to find out more about ophthalmic surgery options at Spire Dunedin Hospital, your hospital in Reading for over 60 years.
