Mr Hugh Clarke
MBBS, FRCS (London)
I use a wide range of implants for hip and knee replacement surgery. My philosophy has always been to use well tried and tested implants with a good research base. I have a particular interest in ceramic hip replacement and have one of the lowest hip revision rates in the UK, being in the top 3% on the National Joint Registry. I also now offer the new piriformis muscle-sparing hip replacement approach.
I have been one of the first users of the new MRI guided Signature system to optimise alignment and function in knee replacement for the last 5-10 years, particularly for young and active patients. I am now a validated consultant to use the new MAKO robot-assisted knee and hip replacement.
I have been a consultant in trauma and orthopaedics in the East Hampshire and West Sussex region since 1994. I graduated from the Middlesex Hospital in London and did my specialist higher surgical training in orthopaedics at the Wessex Orthopaedic Hospital and Southampton University Hospitals.
I undertook a Research and Clinical Fellowship in lower limb joint reconstruction at John Hopkins University in Baltimore in 1988.
Some of the principal treatments carried out by Mr Hugh Clarke at Spire include:
Spire Clare Park Hospital is only able to provide Covid-19 tests to patients undergoing surgery at our hospital. Covid-19 testing or antibody tests are not available as a standalone service.
I have published extensively on research in bone grafting joint replacement surgery, the biomechanic of ankle injuries and outcomes in revision hip replacement surgery. I was involved in the design of two hip replacements in commercial use in the UK and the United States.

My outside interests include fly fishing, cricket and sailing. I am also a keen golfer.
