Some of the principal treatments carried out by Mr David Pugh at Spire include:
I have been a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist for 32 years which has enabled me to have a wealth of clinical and surgical experience. I was responsible for developing a dedicated Women's Health Unit for Colposcopy, Outpatient Hysteroscopy and a tertiary referral centre for pre and post menopausal problems including HRT treatment and management of the Premenstrual Syndrome. I pioneered the use of endometrial laser ablation and laparoscopic hysterectomy in Wales.
I specialise in beneign gynaecological surgery, management of menstrual disorders, pelvic pain, endometriosis and prolapse (with and without the use of mesh). I am the lead Colposcopist for the management of cervical smear and vulval abnormalities. I have lectured and managed on aspects of paediatric gynaecology, polycystic ovarian disease and infertility and will refer on for assisted fertility techniques, e.g. IUI, IVF and ICSI when necessary. I provide treatment of prolapse having participated in seminars in advanced vaginal surgery. I support the values of the British Society for Urogynaecology and use their patient information website to consolidate patients knowledge and expectations preoperatively. I work closely with physiotherapists who specialise in the pelvic floor and have access to urodynamics and investigation as required.
An audit of vaginal and laparoscopic therapeutic surgery carried out between 2013-2014 indicated that I have performed 41 major procedures including vaginal hysterectomy, repair, sacrospinous fixation and sacrocolpoplexy and 118 therapeutic laparoscopic procedures. These figures do not include other major Gynaecological procedures such as abdominal hysterectomy, myomectomy, ovarian cysts and surgery for gynaecological cancer. Over my 32 years as a Consultant Gynaecologist I have performed in excess of 2000 cases of major vaginal and abdominal surgery and in excess of 4000 therapeutic hysteroscopies both as outpatient and day cases. I was also the first gynaecologist at Spire Cardiff Hospital to request and obtain hysteroscopic equipment for patient management.
I am honorary lecturer to Cardiff University medical students and I continue to be lead Colposcopist. I am the Preceptor and Deanery assessor for beneign gynaecological surgery for specialist registrars in Welsh deanery training programme.
I have been privileged to have been a selector for student entry into Cardiff University, Faculty of Medicine. I have also been an examiner for the Membership of The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists for over 10 years.

Outside of my professional commitments, my wife and I enjoy spending time with our three grown up children and very new grandchildren. We love foreign travel, particularly if it includes good food and fine wines. Now that we no longer ski, we enjoy walking in the Alps. We attend the theatre regularly, particularly opera productions at the Wales Millennium Centre. Like all good Welsh men, I am an avid rugby supporter and a fair weather golfer!Back to top
