Specialises in
I have been a Consultant Cardiologist at the University Hospital of Wales since 2008 and have expertise in cardiac imaging which mainly involves echocardiography and nuclear cardiology. Whilst I am a general cardiologist my main clinical interests are concerned with valvular heart disease and the non-invasive assessment of coronary artery disease. I have a major involvement in the assessment of patients for cardiac surgery who have multiple different types of valve disease. This requires a careful evaluation with echocardiography and close liaison within the surgical team. I pride myself on a clear and careful explanation of the issues combined with high quality diagnostic data from my scans. Non-invasive assessment of coronary artery disease refers to tests such as exercise testing and stress echocardiography. This may be needed in a patient with chest pain being investigated for possible angina. Sometimes these tests are required as part of a risk assessment prior to other types of elective non-cardiac surgery.
I specialise in transthoracic echo with or without contrast studies, dobutamine stress echo and transoesophageal echo.
I hold full accreditation from the British Society of Echocardiography for both transthoracic echo and transoesophageal echo. I teach on a number of courses with regard to education within echocardiography.
I am the Clinical Lead for Quality and Safety within the Cardiothoracic unit at the University Hospital of Wales.
