I specialise in medical treatment and assessment of inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis). I see patients with general gastroenterology problems related to the gut, and also perform endoscopy, colonoscopy, gastroscopy and flexible sigmoidoscopy.
I perform 150-200 colonoscopy procedures per year with an uncorrected caecal intubation rate of greater than 90%.
I studied medicine in Cambridge, with clinical training in Oxford. I did an MD in Nottingham with Prof Chris Hawkey 1990-1992. My research interests include clinical trials of immunosuppression in IBD, and the natural history of IBD. I have been a consultant at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff since 1995, specialising in IBD.
I am chairman of the research awards committee for the charity Crohn’s Colitis UK, am a director of the UK IBD Registry, sit on the IBD UK and IBD Wales committees, and am an elected council member for the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG).
