Professional profile

I have managed nearly 30,000 new out-patients, investigating their symptoms and managing the problems. I can therefore call on a huge experience both in clinic and the operating room. My particular areas of interest are in the early detection of colorectal cancer and the "pelvic floor" which involves continence, prolapse and complex anal fistulae. I am happy to take on the latest approached to conditions such as haemorrhoids by the HALO/THD approach but am somewhat of a late adopter. I wait till a technique has its problems ironed out before recommending it to my patients.

I am happy to manage the full range of colorectal diseases from simple anal disorders to the most major abdominal resections. The only general surgery I perform is the mesh repair of hernias. These include inguinal, femoral, ventral, incisional and paraumbilical. I have performed over 500 inguinal hernias with a recurrence rate of 0.8%.

I have been a specialist consultant colorectal surgeon in Cambridge since 1993. I have performed over 7000 colonoscopies (with zero perforations) and 800 anterior resections. The latest information from the ACPGBI shows that there are only 8 surgeons in the country who have performed more cancer operations than me and my mortality, 0.9%, is one of the lowest. (

I am a keen conservationist and have bought land to put this into practice. I enjoy shooting and fishing and am an enthusiastic gardener, under expert guidance from those who know a lot more than me!
