Mr Richard Miller
Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon
MB BS, LRCP MRCS, FRCS, MS
"The Spire team in the clinic and endoscopy suit are always efficient and provide a very good service wth the most up to date equipement."
I have been a specialist colorectal surgeon in Cambridge since 1993. I have seen over 30,000 patients in the clinic to manage their bowel problems so have a huge experience to call on when making a diagnosis and giving advice.
I specialise in colon and rectal surgery. Patients in clinic may present with various problems such as a change in their bowel habit (diarrhoea or constipation), rectal bleeding, abdominal or anal pain, weight loss or anaemia as well as many other issues. My particular areas of interest include the early diagnosis of cancer, management of haemorrhoidal bleeding and prolapse and disorders of the pelvic floor. The only "general surgery" I perform is herina surgery. I was one of the first to introduce mesh repairs of inguinal hernias to Addenbrooke's in 1993 and this is now standard care. I do not perform laparoscopc repair however. Hernia patients are all performed as day cases and need only a few hours in hospital.
I have performed over 800 resections of the rectum, 1,400 colectomies and 7,000 colonoscopies with one of the lowest complication rates and mortality in the country. I have never had a perforation of the colon after colonoscopy, the national rate is 1:1,000. All cancer data is entered into the NBOCAP database for national comparison and validation. My results (30 day mortality) are among the very best in the country and are available on the ACPGBI website.
I have been continuously involved in medical mangement right from the start and have lead surgery at Addenbrooke's until I left the Divisional Director role in 2014. I was then appointed a deputy Medical Director which I left in Dec 2017 when the new MD was appointed.
