Some of the principal treatments carried out by Mr Michael Powar at Spire include:
I was appointed as Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon to the Cambridge Colorectal Unit at Addenbrooke's Hospital in 2012 following prestigious specialist fellowships at the world renowned St Marks and Royal Brisbane Hospitals. I have particular expertise in laparoscopic (keyhole) bowel surgery with one of the most extensive experiences in Cambridge and am involved in training the surgeons of tomorrow and mentoring consultant colleagues.
I offer dedicated specialist consultations during the working day and evenings for private patients, covering all colorectal (bowel and anal) conditions. These potentially embarassing conditions are treated sensitively in a relaxed and friendly manner. I provide a personalised Consultant delivered service from initial consultation and state-of-the-art investigations right through to modern and minimally invasive treatments. I have an active endoscopy practice and regularly perform colonoscopy and flexible sigmoidoscopy to investigate symptoms of change in bowel habit and rectal bleeding. I also provide a general surgical service for patients with abdominal and groin hernias.
My particular interests are modern treatments for haemorrhoids (including HALO and Rafaelo) and minimally invasive laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery for colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease and Ulcerative colitis) and diverticular disease. Keyhole surgery has the benefit of smaller wounds, less painand quicker recovery. I also undertake modern pioneering treatments for patients with bowel function problems including laparoscopic ventral mesh rectopexy for rectal prolapse and sacral nerve stimulation for bowel incontinence. I was the first clinician to perform sacral nerve stimulation for faecal incontinence in the East of England and now provide a region service for this socially limiting condition.
I am lead for Colorectal Pelvic Floor at Addenbrooke's Hospital and Lead for Colorectal Undergraduate teaching at the University of Cambridge Medical School. In addition to my clinical and teaching activities I am Council member for the Coloproctology Section of the Royal Society of Medicine.
