I specialise in a variety of rheumatology conditions, including back pain (acute and chronic), rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, gout, osteoarthritis, fibromylagia, lupus, Sjogren's syndrome, osteoporosis, chronic pain, osteoarthritis (knee, hand, foot and spine), rotator cuff pain, and unexplained joint or musculoskeletal pain. I am an expert in giving joint and soft-tissue injections with cortisone and local anaesthetic.

I am also an expert in the ultrasound of joints, tendons and ligaments. Ultrasound can be used to help diagnosis, to monitor treatment and to give ultrasound-guided cortisone injections to these structures.

I have been a Consultant Rheumatologist at Addenbroooke's Hospital (Cambridge University Hospitals NHSFT) since February 2016 and I am Director of the Rheumatology Research Unit. I am an expert in managing all inflammatory rheumatological diseases (as listed below), but I have particular expertise in psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and ankylosing spondylitis (AS). I give talks on these conditions at international and national medical meetings and publish internationally-recognised book chapters and research papers on these diseases. I contribute to several international steering committees advancing the treatment, care and research of PsA and AS.

Having grown up in Cardiff, I graduated from the University of Wales College of Medicine in 2003 and then undertook specialist training in rheumatology at the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases in Bath (2007 to 2015), where I also completed a PhD thesis in rheumatology from the University of Bath.

The principles of my rheumatology practice are to: spend time listening carefully to my patients so that I deeply understand their symptoms, needs and impact on their life; to thoroughly examine my patients, thinking beyond just their arthritis; to apply established and novel imaging and laboratory tests to better clarify their disease; to safely use established and cutting-edge treatments for their disease; to counsel and educate my patients to empower them to best manage their disease; and to have open, frank and jargon-free conversations with my patients to ensure I am best addressing the issues important to them.

At Cambridge University Hospitals NHSFT I look after patients with psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, rheumatoid arthritis, back pain, gout, osteoarthritis, and other rheumatological conditions. I am the Director of the Rheumatology Research Unit at Cambridge University Hospitals NHSFT (Addenbrooke’s Hospital), where I lead a team of five research nurses, three rheumatology fellows and one administrator. We are currently performing more than 20 clinical trials/studies of novel cutting-edge medications for the treatment of arthritis and other rheumatological diseases. I am currently the principal/chief investigator on more than 10 of these studies.
