Mr Dorward is an established leader in the fields of spinal surgery and endoscopic pituitary surgery. With over 15 years consultant experience and recognised expertise in these fields he aims to apply minimally invasive methods as widely as possible.
Mr Dorward's main interest is in the treatment of spinal conditions. In the cervisal spine he treats mainly degenerative conditions and has experience in the use of prosthetic disc replacement to maximise the retained motion and minimise subsequent deterioration. The lumbar spine is not so amenable to reconstruction, sometimes needing fusion surgery.
Mr Neil Dorward was appointed as a Consultant Neurosurgeon in October 1999 and has a busy clinical practice, averaging 400 operations per year. He is based at the world-renowned National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London and is their leading endoscopic surgeon. Mr Dorward has extensive experience across the breadth of neurosurgery, from brain tumour resection and aneurysm clipping to microdiscectomy and shunt insertion. He has sub-specialised in the fields of spinal surgery and pituitary surgery.
In his practice Mr Dorward has one of the largest series of cervical disc replacement procedures and is a keen exponent of minimal access spinal fusion. He treats all types of spinal conditions from skull base to sacrum. There are many facets to spinal conditions and Mr Dorward is expert in taking into consideration all the clinical, anatomical, functional and social aspects that determine the best course of treatment. He uses an individually designed combination of physical therapies, pain relieving injections and surgical procedures to suit each patient and has an excellent success rate.
