Professional profile

Mr Desai studied medicine at the Government Medical College in Baroda, India and was awarded a postgraduate degree (Master of Surgery MS) in Trauma and Orthopaedics in 1995. He worked as an Orthopaedic consultant from 1995-2004 in India with special interest in MSK Trauma, Bone infection and degenerative spine diseases. He further had the opportunity to work as an Orthopaedic trainee at various centres in the UK, before he was awarded a National Training Number (NTN) in Rehabilitation Medicine from 2007 to 2011 at Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Mr Desai worked as a consultant in Neuro and Trauma Rehabilitation in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and then Stoke-on-Trent from 2011 to. 2012, before joining as a consultant at the Regional Spinal Cord Injuries Centre (London SCIC), Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust, Stanmore. His routine work at London SCIC involves specialist rehabilitation of complex traumatic and non traumatic spinal injuries in adult patients, complex spasticity, neuropathic pain management, musculoskeletal interventions in these patients (Botulinum Toxin injections, Intrathecal Baclofen drug delivery, nerve blocks, joint injections) and Osteoporosis management.

He has also successfully developed a regional specialist spinal rehabilitation service for Metastatic Spinal Cord Compression, at London SCIC. Holistic, multidisciplinary and patient centred care are the core values Mr Desai practices for successful physical, psycho-social and vocational rehabilitation following, complex long term neurological conditions.

Academic and Research Profile: Mr Desai has presented his academic work in Orthopaedics (DYNESYS spine stabilisation system) and Rehabilitation Medicine (Movement disorders, DVT and Thromboprophylaxis, UTI, Depression management and Multiple Sclerosis) at various national and International conferences.
