New revolutionary haemorrhoid treatment available at Bristol Hospital

12 May 2017

An innovative fifteen minute procedure is now available for treating haemorrhoids. The treatment allows patients to avoid the pain of major surgery and resume their normal daily activities immediately.

The treatment known as Rafaelo procedure is now being carried out at Spire Bristol Hospital by consultant colorectal surgeon Mr Paul Sylvester.

Haemorrhoids, or piles, are caused by the deterioration of blood vessel-rich spongy cushions inside the rectum and can affect up to 75% of adults. They are very common and their symptoms can often disappear on their own after a few days. Sometimes though, these symptoms - such as itchiness, discharge, soreness and bleeding - are severe and don't go away. Haemorrhoid treatment is needed to improve them.

This new procedure is based on the same technology as that used to treat varicose veins, it was developed in Poland and has been used to treat more than 2,000 patients. There are over 15 hospitals in the UK now offering Rafaelo and now including Spire Bristol Hospital.

Haemorrhoids are graded from one, the smallest, to four, which are much larger and may be external. Surgery for serious cases is performed under general anaesthetic and can result in the patient taking four weeks off work.

However the Rafaelo technique is suitable for most cases of haemorrhoids, apart from the very large external ones, and generally does not require a general anaesthetic.

Mr Sylvester: "The Rafaelo Procedure is a virtually painless treatment for haemorrhoids that gets individuals back to their normal activities straight away.

"We inject the base of the haemorrhoid with local anaesthetic. Then we take a specially designed metal probe and insert this into the haemorrhoid. Radio-frequency energy is then sent down the probe and the result can be visibly seen as the haemorrhoid shrinks."

The procedure is available on a self-pay basis and patients can walk out the very same day as there is no surgery required and no uncomfortable side effects.

Spire Bristol Hospital will be holding a patient information evening for those interested in getting this new procedure. They are inviting patients to book onto a free mini consultation with Mr Sylvester to discuss the option of receiving the revolutionary Rafaelo procedure.

The event will take place on Tuesday 30 May and appointment slots are available between 6.00pm-8.00pm.

To book your appointment please call Spire Bristol Hospital on 0117 980 4080 or use our enquiry form.

Mini consultations are an opportunity to ask any questions you may have about the Rafaelo treatment, and are not a formal out-patient consultation. If you wish to proceed to treatment, a full outpatient consultation will be required.
