Shirley Read talks about being the Senior Housekeeper/Team Leader at the Spire Yale Hospital. She has been with us for almost six years

“It really is like a big happy family, everyone helps and supports each other”

"Before joining Spire Yale Hospital I was a domestic cleaner in private households and also relief caretaker for Wrexham County Council's Leisure Facilities Dept.

My current job role at Spire involves a varied number of tasks. I lead a team of 6 housekeepers in ensuring rooms are ready for occupation following the policies and procedures and also ensuring all public areas are clean. I am responsible for working within the set budget for the department, and the ordering of stock and stock control. I also look after the linen and liaise with the laundry company.  I ensure all training is up to date for my team's members, and work with them on problem solving and continuous improvements.

I enjoy all aspects of my job but the most rewarding is the appreciation and patient satisfaction and  I am very proud of our achievements of being top in the Spire hospital group for cleanliness of the hospital. We also had an excellent review from Jan Clements, National Head of Clinical Services, about the cleanliness saying it was one of the cleanest hospitals she had visited.

Our hospital may be one of the smallest in the group but it has got a big heart. It really is like a big  happy family, everyone helps and supports each other.                        

I have gained the following skills since joining Spire: computer training, team management, budgeting and stock control, communication skills (i.e, liasing with colleagues at all levels, as well as with patients and consultants).

Some of the challenges in my role include meeting targets, cost control, and working within time schedules.

Our housekeeping team is happy, friendly and very helpful and willing. I value their support ,dedication and commitment to their role and also to Spire Healthcare. I would also like to mention Facilities Manager Stuart Wright for all his support and guidance enabling me to carry out my role.

I help my team fufil their potential through encouragement, training and development, praise, problem solving, and listening to their suggestions and concerns/ Friendliness, flexibility, experience, and a caring nature are some of the attributes I look for in potential candidates."
