Keith Fleary talks about being an Operating Department Practitioner in Theatres at Spire Regency Hospital

"What I like most about working for Spire is that there are a lot of opportunities for advanced learning and development and we are able to be involved in new and innovative techniques."

“I have worked at Spire Regency Hospital for 5 years.  I work in scrub and anaesthetics for most specialities, but I specialise in orthopaedics - scrubbing and assisting in major joint surgery, managing and running lists and doing prosthesis stock checking. I have also been introduced to a wide range of other specialities which I enjoy and did not have the opportunity to do previously, such as bariatrics, cosmetic, and ophthalmic.

What attracted me to work for Spire was how warm and friendly the staff were on my informal visit. Before Spire, I worked at Wythenshaw Hospital theatres. It's quite different here as there are only two theatres, and we do a lot of surgery for a small site so it is important to be flexible.

What I like most about working for Spire is that there are a lot of opportunities for advanced learning and development and we are able to be involved in new and innovative techniques. I've recently been on an extensive shoulder arthroplasty/total replacement course funded by Spire. This has helped me to understand shoulder anatomy, instrumentation for surgery and is a new area for me.

There is a great team culture. It's a friendly environment here with a sense of camaraderie, and the staff and management both have a listening ear.  All team members do care about one another which is rare. We all have a common goal which is the safety and final outcome of the patient being a good one."
