Avid boxer, Ken Lawton, has always prioritised his health and wellbeing.
But in 2018, his heart began to race during moments of rest and although he had no history of any kind of heart conditions, he knew something wasn’t right.
Ken said, “I began to research experts in the area who might be able to help. I’d had a great experience at Spire Cheshire previously, so looked for a consultant cardiologist and got booked in as soon as I could with Dr Ruzsics.
“At my first consultation I was given an ECG, which Dr Ruzsics later explained showed that I had atrial fibrillation.”
Atrial fibrillation is a heart condition that causes an irregular and abnormally fast heart rate. Although the disease in itself isn’t usually life-threatening, it’s a serious medical condition that increases your risk of strokes, heart failure and other heart-related complications.
Symptoms of atrial fibrillation include heart palpitations, reduced ability to exercise, fatigue, dizziness, shortness of breath and chest pain.
“Dr Ruzsics didn’t hurry our consultation at all, and the way I was dealt with was excellent. He was extremely thorough and made me feel at ease, which gave me the confidence to move forward with the procedure.”
Ken had an ablation procedure that is complimented by optimal medical therapy for irregular heartbeat and atrial fibrillation.
“I’m pleased to say that the procedure went smoothly, with no complications, and completely cured my atrial fibrillation symptoms.
“Since my treatment, I’ve taken part in a charity boxing match, which involved a lot of intensive fitness training before hand, and thankfully I had no problems at all. The event went really well and we were able to raise a lot of money for the British Heart Foundation, among other charities.
“As with all procedures, there is a risk of complications. But I was reassured the risk was minimal, and that 75% of procedures result in a complete cure of symptoms.”
