Avascular necrosis femoral head

A less common condition where the blood supply to the femoral head (ball of the ‘ball and socket’ hip joint) is lost, leading to bone pain (constant, not particularly aggravated by weight-bearing) and eventually to collapse of the femoral head and secondary osteoarthritis, causing pain and disability. It can be associated with the intake of certain drugs (eg high dose steroids for asthma).
