Arthritis is the inflammation of a joint, which can lead to loss of cartilage lining that normally allows smooth, pain free movement. This can occur in any joint and is sometimes as part of a widespread condition such as rheumatoid arthritis. However, it is common that only one joint is involved and this may be as a result of a previous injury or can be for no obvious reason. As there are more than 30 joints in the foot and ankle, this is a common cause of pain.
