General adult and old age psychiatry
I am an experienced consultant psychiatrist with dual accreditation on the GMC Specialist Register in both adult and old age psychiatry. I am the Director of Research with Southern Health UHS Foundation Trust and visiting Professor at the Faculty of Science, University of Portsmouth. I am the Mental Health Clinical Lead for the Wessex Clinical Research Network and Wessex leadership across organisations on the strategic development of mental health services. I have been published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and have authored books (including Back to Life, Back to Normality, Cultural Adaptation of CBT for Serious Mental illness, Brief Interventions in Psychosis) especially on Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. I am also an invited speaker at national and international events.
I have mastered specialist skills across the illness pathway through assessment, diagnosis and treatment of common and severe enduring mental health conditions. I have an expertise in supporting people through stressful times in their lives, through developing their resilience and coping strategies by working with them collaboratively and coaching them towards recovery. I aim to provide a high-quality personalised and friendly service where patients experience, choice and needs come first. I understand the needs of carers and do my best to provide family friendly services.
I provide expertise in a wide range of mental health problems in General Psychiatry: anxiety and adjustment disorders, panic attacks, phobias, depression, coping problems and work related stress, bereavement management, bipolar affective disorder, perinatal problems, trauma and post-traumatic stress disorders, behaviour management and personality disorders, alcohol and substance misuse, chronic pain and stress through relationship problems.
I am approved under section 12(2) of the mental health act (1983) as having had special experience in the assessment and management of psychiatric disorders and I have experience in preparing medicolegal reports based on patient interviews, examination and review of notes since 2005. I have been instructed by solicitors and insurance companies to prepare reports on a variety of cases including fitness to plead and stand trial, insanity defence, custody matters, employment issues, personal injury claims, other insurance claims, negligence and critical injury claims. I have been instructed by claimants, defendants and jointly and am experienced in giving evidence in court.
