Some of the principal treatments carried out by Professor Mohammad Abu Hilal at Spire include:
I am a Professor of Hepatobiliary Pancreatic and Minimally Invasive surgery at Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust and Spire Southampton Hospital. I trained as a general surgeon and gained further specialisation in liver surgery, pancreatic surgery and biliary surgery.
I have a special interest in Laparoscopic (keyhole) Surgery and I have led the development of keyhole surgery for the liver and pancreas in the Uk. In the last 12 years I have accumulated one of the largest international experiences in this surgical field. I have developed and published and number of laparoscopic surgical techniques and have offered training and proctoring to more than 300 surgeons from all over the world. At the moment, 90% of my practice is laparoscopic, from the simple procedures, such as laparoscopic hernia repair and gallbladder removal to the most complex pancreatic and liver resections (including Laparoscopic Whipple’s resections and Hemihepatectomies). I am very proud of this, having witnessed the great advantages the Laparoscopic approach offers to my patients, when compared to the traditional open surgery. This is reflected in different postoperative aspects including; shorter hospital stay, earlier functional recovery, and lower complication rates.
In 2014 I represented the UK in the last consensus meeting on laparoscopic liver surgery, held in japan. In 2016, I acted as an expert panel member in the European consensus on Laparoscopic Pancreatic surgery in Amsterdam, the international consensus on Minimally Invasive Pancreatic surgery in Sao Paolo and the International consensus of laparoscopic Hepatobiliary Pancreatic surgery in Coimbatore. In February 2017, I had the honour to host and chair the international expert committee for the development of guidelines in Laparoscopic Liver Surgery (http://www.egmlls2017.com). During this meeting the first set of international Guidelines on Laparoscopic Liver Surgery, were presented. Those guidelines are now published in the highest ranking surgical journal (Annals of Surgery) as The Southampton Guidelines for Laparoscopic Liver Surgery.
I strongly believe in evidence-based medicine and have a very active academic profile. I have published more than 100 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals in addition to hundreds of abstracts and oral presentation, delivered world-wide. I am regularly invited give lectures about Keyhole surgery of the liver and pancreatic surgery in national and international meetings and I am regularly invited to demonstrate surgical techniques via live link surgery from my hospitals and other European and International centres. My personal philosophy is that every case should be fully and carefully evaluated on its own merits. In complex cases, the right management plan should be decided after consultation between the consultant and a team of clinicians from a variety of fields, including, Radiology, Oncology, Histopathology, Surgery and Gastroenterology called multi-disciplinary team (MDT). This approach is essential to ensure a careful evaluation of the case and a correct diagnosis and management plane. Welcome again and I hope you will have clear explanations to address your doubts and answer all your questions.
