Professional profile
Huon Gray qualified from St Thomas’ Hospital, London in 1977 and did postgraduate doctoral research there as a British Heart Foundation Junior Fellow. His cardiology training was undertaken at the Brompton and St George’s Hospitals, London. He was appointed as consultant adult and interventional cardiologist to Southampton University Hospital in 1989.
He was Honorary Secretary of the British Cardiovascular Intervention Society (1992-6), Honorary Secretary (1998-2000) and then President (2003-5) of the British Cardiac Society, and co-chaired the UK National Infarct Angioplasty Project [NIAP] (2004-8). He was Clinical Adviser to the National Institute for Health & Clinical Excellence (NICE) on acute coronary syndromes (2007-10) and is now Chair of NICE’s forthcoming guideline on ST elevation myocardial infraction (STEMI). He is Hon. Civilian Consultant Adviser (Cardiology) to the Army, Chair of the Assembly of International Governors and on the Board of Trustees, of the American College of Cardiology.
He holds honorary professorships in London at Queen Mary’s University (QMUL), and University College (UCL), and has published on various aspects of cardiology and service delivery. He was Deputy National Clinical Director for Heart Disease & Stroke (2007-11), and in 2013 was appointed as the National Clinical Director for Cardiovascular Disease, at the Department of Health (England).
