MB, ChB,MD, FRCS

Specialises in

I am the Professor of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery at the University of Leicester. I was appointed as a consultant general surgeon in Leicester in 1994 with a special interest in surgery of the liver, biliary tract and pancreas. I trained in liver and pancreas surgery with Professor Leslie Blumgart in Berne, Switzerland, Professor Henri Bismuth in Paris and Professor Rudolf Pichylmayr in Hannover.

I have unrivalled experience in complex, major surgery for malignancies of the liver and pancreas and have one of the largest experiences in the UK of ERCP (endoscopic removal of gallstones) and surgical treatment of acute and chronic pancreatitis.

Since 1994 I have run a programme of total pancreatectomy and islet autotransplantation for the treatment of intractable pain from chronic pancreatitis which is the largest series outside the USA.

I am past President of the Pancreatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland, past President of the Great Britain and Ireland Hepatopancreaticobiliary Association and previous National HPB lead on the Association of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery.

Presently I am Chair of the East Midlands Clinical Senate, Chair of the Midlands Clinical Advisory Group and have recently been awarded a Visiting Personal Chair at PUMC Hospital in Beijing.

I have a significant academic profile and have been involved in basic and clinical research for over 35 years. I have given academic lectures in over 40 countries, many of which were keynote, plenary or invited lectures. I continue to be invited on a regular basis to speak and contribute as a faculty member at major international meetings.

I have published over 400 peer reviewed publications. The importance of the research areas to which I contribute, is demonstrated by the fact that I have been cited more than 14,500 times by other scientists and surgeons and the academic metrics that are used to determine the importance of published research (citations 14544, h-index 61 and i10-index 244; Google Scholar October 2021].
