Specialises in

Having studied nutrition since 2005, and practicing as a clinical dietitian in the NHS since 2011, I have a breadth of knowledge and experience in supporting individuals to achieve their nutrition goals. I am a registered dietitian with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and a member of the British Dietetic Association (BDA) and the BDA Diabetes Specialist group.

Working with individuals to realise their goals is what offers satisfaction in my role. I aim to work with and support individuals to understand evidence based nutrition which can be incorporated into everyday life whilst remembering the importance of enjoying food and ensuring changes can be maintained long term for the optimisation of health.

Having practiced as a dietitian with the diabetes specialist team at the Countess of Chester Hospital, I have grown my clinical expertise in type 1 and type 2 diabetes, not only appreciating the nutritional management of diabetes, but also how this is supported by the medical and psychological management of the conditions. I work to support individuals to match their clinical condition to their lifestyle, supporting them with their personal and medical goals.

In the area of weight management, I work within a NHS Tier 3 weight management pathway for individuals preparing for weight loss/bariatric surgery. This involves working with individuals who wish to improve the nutritional quality of their diet and achieve their weight loss targets, and exploring and overcoming the challenges they may face in doing so. Most recently my role has extended to an NHS Tier 4 weight management service which supports individuals during and after their weight loss surgery. Working within a multi-disciplinary team, I have a rounded approach to weight management, understanding the psychological, physical and medical barriers that exist in body weight challenges.

As a clinical lead for Long Term Conditions within a Community Nutrition Team, I am involved in the areas of diabetes, borderline/pre-diabetes, cardiac rehabilitation and weight management. My primary interests are in the areas of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, weight management and cardiovascular disease.

I have been a guest lecturer for the Nutrition and Dietetic courses (Bachelors Degree and Post Graduate Diploma) at the University of Chester on the topic of the dietary management of Type 1 diabetes and Type 2 Diabetes.

I have presented my own research work at national conferences, namely my work on the effectiveness of a group education session for diabetic nephropathy on self-management behaviours at Diabetes UK Professional Conference (which was awarded the Diabetes UK Nursing & Allied Healthcare Professional Diabetes Research Award Runner-up award 2014) and an assessment of Very Low Calorie Diets at the Irish Nutrition Society Conference (2008).

Home is originally Donegal, Ireland and is one of my favourite places to visit. I enjoy running and I am a regular at Chester Parkrun. One of my more memorable runs was a half marathon in Banff National Park, Canada whilst visiting family – having to share the path with an Elk on the last stretch to the finish line made it all the more interesting!
