Professional profile

I have been a consultant at Walsall Hospital since January 2001. For the first few years of this time I was the tutor for the department. Then, from 2011 to 2015, I was the clinical director for our department and it was during this time that we appointed 5 new consultants to join us and implemented resident on call for the delivery suite.

I also run a very successful transvaginal scan workshop twice a year and this has attracted delegates from Australia, UAE and also from all over Europe. I have been the course director for this and I have received very good feedback from delegates attending the workshops. This has further consolidated my leadership and organisational skills. I am also the assessor for TV scan training of trainees in the region. I provide 'hands-on' training to the trainees who want to learn TV scans. This post is very popular in the region and often there is a waiting list for trainees to come to Walsall Hospital for this.

I offer all general gynaecology consultation but my main interests are; menstrual problems, postmenopausal problems and infertility. As I am trained in performing ultrasound scans I am able to offer women with gynaecology problems a 'one-stop' clinic. This clinic provides diagnosis and investigation in one visit. Women are seen and a scan is performed on the first visit and following this further discussion and management are planned. Often if a biopsy of the endometrium is needed then this is performed at the same visit as well. If the scan is normal then the patient is often discharged from the clinic. This is very popular with the women as they have the one clinic appointment and often the diagnosis is achieved with one visit. This is only possible due to my TV scan skills and avoids visits to the radiology department and the follow up visit after the scan. Hence this is basically three appointments merged in one.

Having worked as a consultant since 2001, I have managed to get good experience in the field of Gynaecology. I am able to perform abdominal and vaginal hysterectomies and have been doing this for the last 15 years. In a one year period, I have performed 98 hysteroscopies, 94 laparoscopy and 30 Endometrial ablation procedures in the NHS. I am also trained to perform the new procedure of MyoSure resection of polyp or fibroids in a clinic setting. This is a new device used to remove polyps and small fibroids within the uterine cavity. I have extremely busy clinics in my NHS practice and run the 'one-stop' clinic every week for women with menstrual problems and postmenopausal bleeding.

I am the lead for infertility at Walsall Hospital. I am the lead for transvaginal scan training at Walsall Hospital. I was asked by the Clinical Director in our department, to take on the lead for the Gynaecology risk group due to my busy Gynaecology practice in NHS.

I am an examiner for medical students at Birmingham University. I am also a panel member of the ARCP in the region and go regularly for their eportfolio assessment and appraisals. I am also an assessor for the TV scan exam training skills for doctors who are completing their scan training.

I have regular clinics at Spire Little Aston on Tuesday and Friday evenings. These clinics are 'one-stop' clinics as there is a scanning machine in the outpatient room and hence I get an immediate diagnosis.
