Some of the principal treatments carried out by Mr Steven Livesey at Spire include:
I have been a Consultant Cardiac Surgeon at the University Hospital Southampton since 1990. I have performed over 7,500 cardiac operations in Southampton during this time. My surgical experience encompasses all aspects of adult cardiac surgery. This includes both first time and redo coronary artery bypass grafting and valve procedures, as well as thoracic aortic surgery.
I have a special interest and expertise in mitral valve surgery. I am acknowledged as a British and international expert on repair of the mitral valve, having performed over 1,000 of these procedures, including my recognised modifications of mitral valve repair technique. My personal operative results, and those of the Cardiac Unit at University Hospital Southampton (UHS), are available for public scrutiny on the website of the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland (www.scts.org). My personal operative outcomes, and those of the Cardiac Unit at UHS, have consistently been significantly better than expected when adjusted for patient risk. The outcomes at UHS compare favourably with other cardiac units in the United Kingdom.
My experience and results at Spire Southampton Hospital are available for scrutiny on the Spire Hospital website. I have performed almost 2,000 cardiac procedures at this hospital with a mortality rate less than 0.50% for all cases - despite a varied case mix. The outcomes for the Cardiac Surgical Group at Spire Southampton are especially outstanding considering the surgical and operative risk profiles of patients are equivalent to many much larger cardiac units in the United Kingdom. The risk adjusted surgical outcome data for myself and the Cardiac Surgical group are consistently updated on the Spire Southampton website.
I have a long standing involvement and leadership reputation both at regional and national level in cardiac surgery. I have been a speciality advisor to NCEPOD and an assessor for the National Clinical Assessment Service as well as a specialist advisor to NICE. I am a member of the Specialist Advisory Committee for cardiothoracic surgery as well as a national clinical lead for NHS improvement (HEART). I am an examiner for the final FRCS (Cardiothoracic) Intercollegiate Examination. I am the lead for re-validation with the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in GB & Ire and I was the Chair of the Cardiac Surgery Clinical Expert Panel of Healthcare for London. I am currently Chair of the Cardiothoracic Specialist Advisory Committee of the Surgical Royal Colleges.
I received my undergraduate training at Manchester University graduating MB, ChB in 1979. I then trained in cardiothoracic surgery in Papworth, St. Georges and Middlesex Hospitals before becoming Senior Registrar at the Brompton and National Heart Hospitals in London between 1987 – 1989. From 1989 – 1990 I was a Fellow at Duke University, North Carolina, USA. On return to the United Kingdom I came to Southampton 1990 as a Consultant Cardiac Surgeon. In 2010 I was appointed Lead Surgeon, cardiac surgery at the University Hospital Southampton.

I have over 25 years of experience in clinical research in the field of cardiac surgery. This has resulted in the publication of over 60 peer reviewed publications. My major field of professional interest and expertise is in the field of mitral valve repair and reconstruction. I have not only published widely on my own experience, but also described my own modified mitral valve repair technique. I was recently the leading implanter in the European registry on the new “PHYSIO II” mitral annuloplasty ring.
