Specialises in

  • General surgery
  • Colorectal surgery

  • Hernia repair surgery

Having studied at Aberdeen University, I did most of my training throughout Scotland apart from a brief spell in Bristol. Laterally training in Edinburgh prior to becoming a consultant at the Western General Hospital in 1994.

During my years as a consultant I have strongly supported the move towards sub-specialty interests in surgery. As the lead clinician in surgery at the Western General Hospital, I was one of the principal clinicians involved in the unique changes to surgical practice in Edinburgh, culminating in the establishment of the Lothian Colorectal Unit at the Western General Hospital. We are now the largest specialist colorectal surgery unit in the UK. The unit serves a population of over 750,000 and deals with all elective and emergency colorectal surgical admissions in Lothian.

My main clinical interests are in colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease and population screening for large bowel neoplastic disease. I am currently the lead clinician in Lothian with responsibility both for colorectal cancer services and the Scottish Large Bowel Screening Project.

My clinical interests in inflammatory bowel disease include membership of the ACPGB&I IBD subcommittee, the National IBD Audit, and the Clinical Standards Board. I have a particular interest in adolescent/childhood disease.

I work in Spire Shawfair Park's endoscopy suite which holds JAG accreditation.

As I was brought up in East Lothian, I have always enjoyed the great outdoors and have a lifelong interest in mountaineering at both home and abroad. More recently, along with my wife Inez, I have rekindled my interest in skiing encouraged by our three children.
