Some of the principal treatments carried out by Mr Nijaguna Mathad at Spire include:
Endoscopic pituitary surgery
Skull base tumours including meningiomas, acoustic neuroma and epidermoids
Endoscopic skull base surgery for central skull base tumours
I completed my neurosurgical training from King Edward Memorial Hospital, Bombay in 1989. I then worked as the Asst. Prof of Neurosurgery in a university approved hospitals for five years. After working for 30 months at the Ministry of Health in Oman, I started my career in Preston in 1997. Here I gained significant experience in vascular and spinal neurosurgery following which I moved to Morriston Hospital, Swansea.
I obtained my diploma from The European Association of Neurological Societies in 2002. I joined The Wessex Neurological Centre in 2003 to complete my specialist training. I was appointed a Consultant Neurosurgeon at the Wessex Neurological centre in May 2006. My specialist areas are Skull base surgery and Pituitary surgery. I am Lead Pituitary Surgeon at Southampton. I regularly performs Cranio-facial surgery with maxillo-facial surgeons and lateral skull base surgery with neuro-otologists.
I started endonasal endoscopic skull base surgery at UHS, and regularly perform these operations with my Rhinology Colleague, Mr Rokade. This involves accessing central skull base tumours (and pituitary tumours) using endoscopes through nose. This minimal access surgery is at the cutting edge of endoscopic skull base surgery.
I am a core neurosurgeon in Skull base MDT and Pituitary and Craniopharyngioma MDT. I am also a Member of Specialist Advisory Committee (SAC) in Neurosurgery. I regularly teach in neurosurgery and ENT courses. I regularly present my results in neurosurgical national meetings and have a number of publications in international journals.
