Some of the principal treatments carried out by Mr Martyn Newey at Spire include:
Lumbar spine disorders.
I qualified as a doctor in 1986, I then trained in orthopaedic surgery between 1992 and 1997 in the South West Thames and West Midlands regions. After completing a Neuro-Orthopaedic Spinal fellowship in Adelaide, South Australia I came to Leicester as a consultant in 1998. I am a Member of the Faculty of Examiners for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and an Assessor for the Intercollegiate MRCS. Combining work with my interest in rugby, I am the pitchside doctor for Leicester Tigers.
My main interest is in common spinal disorders including neck pain, back pain and sciatica. Although I still work as a consultant spinal surgeon I have now retired from operating. I have performed about 1000 spinal procedures and so I understand not only the role of surgery but perhaps more importantly when not to operate. Most people with a spinal problem do not actually need surgery. However, they do often want the reassurance that there is nothing seriously wrong with their spine. I can provide an assessment of their spinal problem and then a discussion about how they can improve their symptoms. I will offer advice on the non-surgical management of spinal problems and on those occasions where I do feel that surgery is appropriate I will refer accordingly to one of my surgical colleagues.
I am also a director of a limited company that provides a community based minor hand service.
Lumbar spine disorders
Common spinal disorders including back pain, sciatica and spinal claudication. I am keen on the non-operative approach to the management of back pain.

I was born in Birmingham and went to King Edward VI Grammar School Aston. Having spent too much time playing the guitar and drinking beer, I did not achieve the necessary A Levels to go to medical school. I therefore studied Electronics with Medical Instrumentation at Sussex University where I obtained a 2:1 with which St George's Hospital Medical School in London kindly accepted me. I have been a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Leicester since 1998.
In my own time, apart from my link with rugby, I occasionally play golf and still enjoy playing the guitar and drinking beer. I am also a trustee of a small charity called CDKL5 UK. CDKL5 is a rare genetic condition that mainly affects girls, including my daughter. I have developed my own website www.supporting-cdkl5.co.uk to help provide information to families who have children with CDKL5 and hopefully encourage and facilitate fund-raising events in support of further research into the condition.Back to top
