Mr Marc Laniado

Specialises in

I am dedicated to returning men to as normal a life as possible when suffering from prostate enlargement or with prostate cancer. I am highly experienced and works full time in the direct clinical care of men with prostate problems. As the prostate cancer and multidisciplinary urological cancer lead, I have developed and deliver minimally invasive techniques daily that have significantly helped my patients. I provide individually-tailored therapies alleviating urinary symptoms or reducing the chance of dying from prostate cancer, with the greatest chance of preserving erections, ejaculation and bladder control.

I am a highly-respected specialist, with over 15 years experience in full-time, direct care of men without distraction from other non-clinical activities. Using a unique range of skills, which are audited, I offer a personalised approach to prostate enlargement or prostate cancer, tailoring tests and treatment to the individual with the specific aim of preserving continence, erections and ejaculation in selected men.

I was appointed as a consultant to Wexham Park Hospital (Frimley Health) in 2002, where I am the lead for prostate cancer. specialising in rapid diagnostic techniques and minimally invasive treatments for prostatic enlargement and prostate cancer. I am the prostate cancer lead clinician and urological cancer multidisciplinary lead. My private practice is based in Harley Street, London, and Berkshire.

I graduated from Guy's Hospital Medical School in 1989, having previously gained a BSc in physiology. Following specialist urology training in London, I became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Urology) in 2000, going on to complete my MD in prostate cancer research, Fellow of the European Board of Urology in 2002 and international member of the American Urological Association. Prior to taking up my career as a consultant, I extended his knowledge and skills on a Visiting Fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in the USA, where I trained in minimally invasive surgical techniques.

I offer expert assessment and treatment of urinary symptoms caused by prostate enlargement (benign prostatic hyperplasia, BPH), such as increased frequency, slow flow and getting up in the night. When lifestyle changes and medications fail to improve symptoms, I offer the UroLift procedure, which alleviates urinary symptoms without affecting erections or ejaculation. It is a minimally-invasive, day-case procedure performed without a catheter. In a man with a prostate that is unsuitable for UroLift, I perform a laser prostatectomy (HoLEP) as a day-case or overnight stay, which has the advantage of minimal bleeding and fewer side-effects compared to the more common procedure know as TURP. I have also developed a modified method of HoLEP (epHoLEP) that is designed to preserve normal ejaculation in selected men.

I have been responsible for the development of innovative pathways and treatments that benefit all men at risk of prostate cancer. I use multiparametric MRI to determine the risk and to decide whether further investigations, such as MRI-targeted transperineal prostate biopsies are needed. These biopsies are much more accurate and safer than the more frequently used unguided transrectal prostate biopsies. I also use the new urine test SelectMDx to avoid biopsies in some situations. When prostate cancer is detected, in suitable cases I consider active surveillance (AS) or focal therapy with HIFU, which is a technique that preserves bladder control and erections. To help decide on the need for treatment, the Prolaris biomarker, is sometimes used to identify cancers that are not life-threatening. Where the cancer is not suitable for either AS or focal therapy, I offer either brachytherapy or a Retzius-sparing prostatectomy, which is a new technique that preserves bladder control almost completely, and better than any other surgical method for removing the prostate. As a full-time clinician in the daily management of men with prostate disease, I perform these procedures regularly.
