I am Honorary Lecturer in Ophthalmology and affiliated to The Ocular Biomechanics group in The Department of Engineering at Liverpool University as well as sometime Visiting Lecturer at Gresham College London. My Thesis; An investigation of homeostasis in retinal vein occlusion was accepted by The University of Sheffield in 1992. My research interests are in Bayesian conditional probability modelling, using natural frequencies, applied to clinical decision making and diagnostic logic. My clinical practice is primarily broad-based general ophthalmology with specialisms in glaucoma, uveitis, macula degeneration and vascular retinopathies. I am an executive member of The BMA NW Regional Council and hold the BMA accredited post of Deputy Chairman of the Medical Board of Wirral Teaching Hospital Foundation NHS Trust. I farm - part-time - on the banks of a remote lough in Ireland. The farm’s low-energy house was designed to facilitate "off-grid" living, supported by a large permaculture kitchen garden.
I am also working through basic certifications in bicycle and car [2CV and Landrover] mechanics. I am Honorary Lecturer in Ophthalmology and Research Fellow in Risk and Uncertainty in The Department of Engineering at Liverpool University [and affiliated to The Ocular Biomechanics group] as well as sometime Visiting Lecturer at Gresham College London.
My favourite leisure interest is listening to live music. I do play several musical instruments, mercifully without feeling compelled in any way to perform publically. I read on a wide range of subjects, enjoy art-house cinema and cooking with my children.
For holidays I ski and to sightsee, but my absolute preference is for cycle-touring along ancient highways in Europe. To me this is an absorbing pastime, in execution and especially planning.
I can waste blissful hours in the innocent pleasure of distinguishing between seemingly identical "must-have" bicycle components before executing online purchase.Back to top
