Professional profile

I specialise in general thoracic surgery, with specific large experience in VATS (keyhole) surgery as an access to treat lung cancer, take biopsies of lung, pleura etc, and other benign conditions. I specialise in minimal access sub-xiphoid approach to thymic resection for thymomas and myasthenia gravis. I also have large experience in VATS plication of the diaphragm. I have a large experience in corection of chest wall deformities, using the NUSS technique and the open techniques (Ravich and Robicsek procedures). I have specific interest in VATS systematic nodal dissection, and biopsy of nodes in the chest in general. I do not deal with oesophageal conditions.

I have started the VATS programme in Southampton in 2005, and my firm has so far performed more than 600 cases of lung resections (wedge, segmentectomy, lobectomy, bilobectoy and pnemonectomy). I started the routine addition of VATS systematic nodal dissection to lung cancer surgery in 2007, and have performed more than 400 cases. My technique for thymus resection has evolved from open sternotomy, to bilateral chest VATS access to right side access, and I settled perfecting the Sub-xiphoid approach which is less painful and allow up to 10cm tumours to be removed. My experience with diaphragmatic VATS plication is approaching 35-40 cases, and I have described new VATS approaches to congenital diaphragmatic hernias presenting in adults. these are rare, but can be treated by VATS.

I hold an honorary lecturer position at the University of Southampton.

I have published widely in the speciality of thoracic surgey, and in specific Video Assisited Thoracic Surgery. My publications include our results in octogenerians (above 80 years olds) which show that they tolerate VATS lung resection as much as younger patients. I enjoy publishing teaching videos. Several of these teaching videos are on YouTube and i was previllaged by collaborating with Professor Parchad at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences to restudy and redescribe the anatomy of the recurrent laryngeal nerve in the chest. This is a milestone in nodal dissection and avoidance of complications arising from injury to this nerve.
