Some of the principal treatments carried out by Mr John Oates at Spire include:
I qualified from Birmingham Medical School in 1979, trained in both the East and West Midlands and was appointed Consultant ENT Surgeon in 1990. In addition to a busy, general adult and paediatric ENT practice I lead a National/International referral service treating chronic and traumatic ear problems, and Otosclerosis. I co-introduced fibre lasers to UK ear surgery in the 1990's and remain at the forefront in this field.
I have been a permanent Faculty Member of several prestigious international ear courses for more than two decades and also lecture and teach advanced surgical skills in Europe, North and South America. In order to facilitate surgical education and improve results, together with a French colleague in 2003, I conceived of and am currently Vice President of the Live Otolaryngology Network (LION) Foundation (www.lion-web.org). The LION Foundation brings together the best ENT surgeons in the world in order to promote training and share expertise by worldwide transmission of live surgery and “real time” discussion with operating surgeons.
I was honoured by the rarely granted NHS Clinical Excellence (CEA) Gold Award in 2006. This was revalidated and renewed by the ACCEA in 2011 in recognition of sustained clinical, educational and research contribution. UK peer elected to represent the UK and Eire in Europe for three continuous terms of office, from 2004-2014, I am an Executive Officer of CEORL-HNS which has helped establish as pan European ENT educational body with a current membership of over 50,000 ENT colleagues. I sit on the Presidential Council and am Treasurer of the organisation. Previous roles include Specialist Advisory Committee Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Council Member ENT-UK, Council Member the British Society of Otology, President of YCOHNS and a Government invited appointment to The Hearing Aid Council.
I am committed to teaching and sharing expertise between different specialties. In 2003, I founded and co-organised an annual international course aimed at improving patient focused clinical service by fostering increased awareness and cooperation between hospital consultants, GP's and NHS managers. Now about to celebrate its 15th year it has evolved to focus on ENT and associated specialties.
