I am a Consultant ENT surgeon and am Head of both the ENT Department at Cambridge University Hospitals and the Regional Skull Base Unit. I treat both children and adults with general ENT problems, specialising in hearing and balance issues, sinusitis, Eustachian tube dysfunction, paediatric ENT problems, hearing implantation and skull base surgery. I pioneered introduction of balloon dilatation of the Eustachian tube in the UK and regularly see patients referred from other ENT surgeons.
I have worked in London, Cambridge and California and have won many academic prizes over my career including the Royal Society of Medicine Otology gold medal. I have edited four ENT books, published over 75 research papers, have an active research and teaching programme, being regularly invited to present my work internationally. I am the Editor-in-Chief of Clinical Otolaryngology, one of the world’s leading ENT journals.
I hold several national positions. I am the Chair of the NHS England clinical group that decides on how specialist ENT services are provided across the NHS. I am also a member of the NICE (National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence) Interventional Procedures Committee who are responsible for evaluating and recommending operations across the NHS. I am also a member of Council of both the Royal Society of Medicine Otology section and the British Skull Base Society as well as the lead for ENT UK’s e-learning platform.
I am an Associate Clinical Lecturer at the University of Cambridge Clinical School and a member of Cambridge University Health Partners Innovation Panel. I advise companies on product design and have received grant funding for early stage development of medical innovations.

Mr Tysome runs an active research group investigating new treatments for Eustachian tube dysfunction, vestibular schwannomas and vestibular implants He is also the Chief Investigator of Multi-Centre clinical trials investigating a novel therapy to treat tinnitus. He has received several research grants and supervises PhD and MPhil students. He is the National Health Institute for Research Eastern region deputy lead for ENT, is invited to speak internationally at conferences and scientific meetings and has published over 40 papers.

I spend most of my spare time with my wife and three young children. I also enjoy swimming, cycling and running and I regularly compete in triathlons, marathons and other endurance events.
