Professional profile

I am a Consultant ENT surgeon and am Head of both the ENT Department at Cambridge University Hospitals and the Regional Skull Base Unit. I treat both children and adults with general ENT problems, specialising in hearing and balance issues, sinusitis, Eustachian tube dysfunction, paediatric ENT problems, hearing implantation and skull base surgery. I pioneered introduction of balloon dilatation of the Eustachian tube in the UK and regularly see patients referred from other ENT surgeons.

I have worked in London, Cambridge and California and have won many academic prizes over my career including the Royal Society of Medicine Otology gold medal. I have edited four ENT books, published over 75 research papers, have an active research and teaching programme, being regularly invited to present my work internationally. I am the Editor-in-Chief of Clinical Otolaryngology, one of the world’s leading ENT journals.

I hold several national positions. I am the Chair of the NHS England clinical group that decides on how specialist ENT services are provided across the NHS. I am also a member of the NICE (National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence) Interventional Procedures Committee who are responsible for evaluating and recommending operations across the NHS. I am also a member of Council of both the Royal Society of Medicine Otology section and the British Skull Base Society as well as the lead for ENT UK’s e-learning platform.

I am an Associate Clinical Lecturer at the University of Cambridge Clinical School and a member of Cambridge University Health Partners Innovation Panel. I advise companies on product design and have received grant funding for early stage development of medical innovations.
