I qualified from Cambridge University and St Bartholomew's Hospital in 1973 and undertook postgrad training at teaching hospitals in Birmingham, London and Cambridge. I was a rotating senior registrar at St.Mary's Hospital, London and Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge. I was appointed consultant in 1985.
I was active in undergraduate teaching in the UK, as well as a trainer and postgraduate teacher in the UK, Sudan, UAE, Nigeria and India. I undertook postgraduate training in keyhole surgery in the UK, Belgium, Sweden and Germany
I was an Examiner for the University of London and the MRCOG, and I'm still an Examiner for the General Medical Council. I was also a foundation Fellow of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Apart from my family pursuits, my hobbies include bridge at club level, photography, theatre, sports and travel. I am a member of the MCC and the Oxford and Cambridge University Club.
I have served as a magistrate and am a patron of several charities. I was also proud to have been bestowed with the honour of Freeman of the City of London in 1999.
I have received several community awards for excellence and dedication.
