I have been a consultant gynaecologist for over 15 years and I am a specialist in urogynaecology. In addition to providing a general gynaecology service, I look after women with bladder and pelvic floor problems. I provide my patients with a detailed and thorough assessment, with treatment decisions being made in partnership with patients.
I specialise in the management of bladder and pelvic floor problems, such as urinary incontinence, overactive bladder, bladder pain, cystitis, recurrent infections and prolapse. I have accumulated considerable experience in the simple and complex prolapse surgery eg repeat surgery. I work and liaise with other health professionals (eg physiotherapists, colorectal surgeons) when necessary to ensure my patients receive a high standard of care.
My approach is to tailor treatment to the individual rather than a one size fits all. This is particularly important when it comes to surgery when having a number of techniques gives women a choice. I also have over 20 years' experience managing menstrual disorders, ovarian cysts and abnormal vaginal bleeding. I receive very positive feedback from patients and my colleagues.
In my NHS and private practice, I have performed over 1,400 procedures to treat urinary incontinence, over 900 vaginal repairs, 275 vaginal hysterectomies and 100 abdominal hysterectomies, 94 abdominal procedures to treat uterovaginal prolapse, over 1,200 urodynamic investigations, over 50 endometrial ablations, over 200 laparoscopies, over 1,700 cystoscopies and over 300 hysteroscopies.
I am clinical lead for urogynaecology at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust and I am the Deputy Chair of the Spire Parkway Hospital Medical Advisory Committee.
In addition, I am also vice-chair of the Information Committee of the British Society of Urogynaecology. I am also the Deputy Chair of and the Gynaecology Representative on the Spire Parkway Hospital Medical Advisory Committee. These are unpaid positions.
I record outcomes of all continence procedures and prolapse operations so that I can audit my results, including complications. An audit allows me to make improvements where possible and also provides me with information which I can share with patients so they know what results to expect following a particular treatment. I submit my outcomes from continence and prolapse surgery to the British Society of Urogynaecology Database.
