Some of the principal treatments carried out by Mr Gavin Bowyer at Spire include:
All aspects of foot and ankle surgery, including minimally invasive foot and ankle surgery, trauma and sports injuries.
I am a consultant orthopaedic surgeon with a special interest in foot and ankle surgery. Throughout my career as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon, from 1997 onwards, I have run a foot and ankle practice that closely involves colleagues in physiotherapy and podiatry. I provide a service for patients with foot and ankle problems related to sports and training, arthritis or conditions such as foot and toe deformities. My aim is to provide a complete service, optimising the outcome for patients, aiming to return them to the activities they wish to pursue, in comfort.
I went to Cambridge University in 1979, to read Medical Sciences. I went on to Oxford University in 1982, to complete my clinical training. I joined the army and underwent further surgical training in London and Southampton, and spent a busy year in the USA as a Fellow in the Shock Trauma Centre in Baltimore. I enjoyed a number of exciting postings on military tours of duty. I developed a major interest in the management of foot and ankle problems, especially after injury and in the active sports person. Later NHS experience and training developed this further, with care of the whole range of foot and ankle conditions. I have had a long association with Southampton University Hospitals, and after leaving the Armed Forces I took up a consultant post there in 1999.
I am a Fellow of the British Orthopaedic Association, and a member of several societies including the British Trauma Society, British Limb Reconstruction Society, and British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society. I have presented my work on foot and ankle surgery in UK, as well as at the European Foot and Ankle Society and many other European meetings, and as an invited speaker in Australia, China, Russia and the United States. I teach regularly on foot and ankle courses, in the UK and internationally.
I am a director and shareholder of Mosaic Healthcare Limited which provides consultancy services to the hospital, such as independent appraisals and medical legal reviews for up to 2.5 days per month.

I love the local area and all it has to offer. I enjoy sailing on the Solent and further afield with my family, running on the Clarendon Way and South Downs and fishing the Test and Itchen.Back to top
