Some of the principal treatments carried out by Mr Fraser M. Smith at Spire include:
Investigating and treating rectal bleeding All forms of haemorrhoid advice and treatment including ligation banding and doppler-guided haemorrhoidectomy (T.H.D), Faecal incontinence and pelvic floor dysfunction, Inguinal, umbilical and incisional hernia repair, Anal fistulas, fissures (including botox injection), Day/minor surgery including the removal of lumps and bumps Colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy Colon and rectal cancer including laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery, Surgical management of inflammatory bowel disease
I graduated with an MB ChB from the University of Glasgow in 2000. As an undergraduate, I also completed a two year Honours Bachelor of Science Degree. I then completed my basic and specialist surgical training in Southern Ireland after which I undertook two prestigious one-year colorectal fellowships. The first was in Professor Ara Darzi’s Unit in St Mary’s Hospital, London and the second was in the world famous Department of Colorectal Surgery at The Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, Ohio, USA.
I specialise in both open and laparoscopic general and colorectal surgery. In addition to major surgery for cancer and inflammatory bowel disease, I specialise in surgery for haemorrhoids (including banding/THD and formal haemorrhoidectomy), anal fissures and fistulas, faecal incontinence, hernia repair, gallbladder surgery and colonoscopy and flexible sigmoidoscopy.
Now as an established consultant in the UK, I work at The Royal Liverpool Hospital, and Spire Liverpool Hospital and have continued to perform a wide range of general and coloproctological surgery. I have additionally been involved in pioneering new surgical techniques aimed at improving the outcome for patients. I was one of the first wave of surgeons in the UK to complete training in and perform transanal TME surgery for rectal cancer. I am also highly experienced in colonoscopy and the treatment of haemorrhoids and rectal bleeding.
In addition to my surgical commitments, I have a strong interest in surgical research, in particular investigating minimally invasive and non-operative (watch and wait) treatment for rectal cancer. Currently I have 30 publications in peer-reviewed journals and am frequently invited to speak at both national and international meetings.

When I am not working, I love to spend time with my wife and two sons who are 7 and 5 years old. A lot of this involves taking the boys to football training and matches or cheering from the side-lines as my wife plays hockey for the local team. My other main interest is in the arts and I enjoy spending time in galleries, gardens or listening to music.
I also devote time to my position as Chair of the Arts Development Team where we commission artworks for the new Royal Liverpool Hospital. I am a great believer that a healing environment positively impacts on health and wellbeing and really believe that the fantastic work that is being installed will be of huge benefit to patients, visitors and staff when the building is completed.Back to top
