Mr Evert Smith
Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon
BSc, MB BCh, FRCS
After completing my undergraduate medical degree in South Africa, I developed extensive experience in trauma and orthopaedics in Baragwanath Hospital, Soweto and Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town. I have also worked in Germany where I studied aspects of hip and knee replacement surgery.
In 1991 I received the Lillie Research Fellowship and continued my studies in total joint replacements at the Arthroplasty unit at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, USA.
After becoming a consultant in Bristol, I implemented the use of risk based methodology for total joint replacements at the Avon Orthopaedic Centre in Bristol. I continue my research into aspects of lower limb arthroplasty (primary and revision hip replacements), impaction bone grafting in revision hip surgery and the design of hip prosthese.
I am an organiser of 'Debates about Hip Replacements', an annual event in Bristol attended by experts in their field from the UK, Europe and the USA. I am a member of the American, European and British Orthopaedic Research Societies as well as British and European Hip Society.
Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, North Bristol NHS Trust.
Honorary Consultant Senior Lecturer, University of Bristol.
I was a keen sportsman in my school and university years. I maintain an avid interest in all sports, particularly rugby and cricket. I get great pleasure from undertaking the orthopaedic care of the South Africa cricket team during their British tours, including the Cricket World Cup in 1999. My other hobbies include swimming, squash, reading, art and photography.
