Some of the principal treatments carried out by Mr David R Tollafield at Spire include:
Mr Tollafield has now retired, his replacement is Miss Helen Milnes Consultant Podiatric Surgeon.
My main role is treating all forms of pain and deformity in feet but I specialise in surgical management of severe corns under the sole of feet which is probably unique to my specialty.
I have been working as a podiatrist for 38 years and commenced my practice in foot surgery in 1996 when I was awarded my fellowship. I taught at Northampton University as a senior lecturer (1985-1994) and have contributed to a number of publications. My background is therefore both academic and clinical. My formative years commenced as a full time consultant in 1995 at Walsall where I was also tasked with starting the successful Dudley Podiatric Surgery service. I have worked at Nuffield and Ramsay Hospital in the West Midlands but now enjoy working at Spire Little Aston. Throughout my career I have travelled widely within the US, New Zealand and South Africa as well as Finland lecturing. Part of my pre-surgical training was based in San Francisco as well as Seattle where I developed my biomechanics intertest as well as developed advanced foot and ankle surgery. I retired from Walsall Manor Hospital in 2013, where I was a consultant for twenty years. I shall complete my Masters Degree in 2016 from Huddersfield University.
I undertake management of joint pain within the whole foot working closely with our radiology service at Spire. We provide injection treatment as well as extra-corporeal shock wave for heel pain. General podiatry is provided in house by our excellent colleagues who work with Perform, our skilled physiotherapy team. While surgery is not always required, it is hoped that advice and decision making considers options for all patients so that their care is tailored to their specific needs. Unlike many podiatrists I have the benefit of anaesthetist support so where patients are anxious they know we will look after those highs and lows. Having had surgery myself at Spire I know only too well what may be in a patient's thoughts when coming to our hospital for treatment.
Between 1 October 2010 and 8 April 2016, in two centres, I did 681 bunion and stiff toes surgeries, 252 hammer toe deformities surgeries, 92 neuroma surgeries, 48 fascia / heels surgeries, 113 nail surgeries (phenol) and 39 incisional nail surgeries. Overall 1944 episodes of care and 2698 treatment events (some not listed).
