I treat a variety of colorectal conditions including colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease.
My specialist interest is in the surgical management of colorectal disease. I also offer multidisciplinary assessment and treatment for various pelvic floor problems such as faecal incontinence, obstructive defecation, rectal prolapse and rectocele. I am a trained laparoscopic surgeon.
I also manage the full range of benign ano-rectal problems such as piles, fistula-in-ano, pilonidal disease and anal fissures. I offer modern techniques for the management of haemorrhoidal disease (piles), which include the stapled haemorrhoidectomy (PPH) and haemorrhoidal artery ligation techniques (HALO and THD).
I am a trained colonoscopist and provide diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy for management of benign and malignant diseases on the colon and rectum.
I am the clinical lead for colorectal surgery and am a core member of the multidisciplinary teams managing patients with colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease at the trust. I graduated from Liverpool Medical School in 1984 and completed my basic surgical training in the Mersey region. I moved to the West Midlands in 1987 where I completed my higher surgical training in General and Colorectal Surgery.
I was awarded a Sheldon Research Fellowship for my research into colorectal cancer, which led to an MD from the University of Birmingham in 1996. I was a visiting fellow at the Sloan Kettering Cancer Institute in New York where I studied the treatment of early and advanced colorectal cancer. I was appointed as a Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon at the Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust in 1997 and am a Fellow and examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Honorary Senior Lecturer of the University of Birmingham and a member of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland. I am the West Midlands Chapter representative for the Association and currently represent the West Midland colorectal surgeons at the council of the Association.
