Mr Alex Woollard
Consultant Plastic Surgeon
BM BSc PhD FRCS (plast)
I have been a consultant plastic surgeon at the Royal Free London NHS Trust since 2016. I specialise in microsurgical reconstruction of defects after cancer or trauma as well as nerve regeneration. I have a particular interest in nerve injuries, amputee reconstruction and facial palsy as well as breast reconstruction.
My interests include all aspects of aesthetic and general plastic surgery, and I have a sub-specialist focus in nerve regeneration, facial reanimation and microsurgical reconstruction. My NHS practice includes the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore where I provide lower limb and sarcoma reconstruction. He am a founding partner in ReLimbTM which offers a complete reconstruction service for amputees including Targeted Muscle Reinnervation (TMR) and Regenerative Peripheral Nerve Interface (RPNI).
I was awarded a PhD from my research into nerve regeneration at Harvard University. This has spurred on my interest in surgery for neuromas and phantom limb pain in amputees. As a founding member of Relimb I am pioneering these novel techniques in the UK. I pursue my interest in microsurgal reconstruction (free tissue transfer) in both breast and the highly complex limb and sarcoma reconstructions in both the NHS and private sector and have performed over 300 free flaps.
I am a specialist advisor for both the MHRA and NICE. I am the lead for Lasers and for departmental audit at the Royal Free London NHS Trust.
I am on the Board, and treasurer, of the Cosmetic Practice Standards Authority (CPSA) and a trustee of the Joint Council for Cosmetic Practice (JCCP).
