Some of the principal treatments carried out by Dr Steve Shaw at Spire include:
I am a consultant cardiologist and a leading heart failure specialist for Manchester. I am one the few cardiologists in the country with expertise in ventricular assist devices and transplant. I qualified in 1999 from The University of Manchester and returned there in 2006 for three years to complete a PhD in medical research. I was awarded the Ellen Mitchell Memorial Medal for Postgraduate Student of the Year in 2009 in recognition of the quality and impact of my research output. I took my position as consultant cardiologist in 2012 at Wythenshawe Hospital, which is known for having one of the largest heart failure units in the UK.
I am known internationally in my field and have lectured all over the world on subjects including heart failure, statins, ventricular assist devices and heart transplant. I have published over 40 peer reviewed articles and contributed to writing The Oxford Handbook of Chronic Heart Failure.
I currently hold a position as Senior Lecturer at The University Of Manchester. I am an examiner and supervisor to MD and PhD students. I also retain an active role in research and currently am the only UK based specialist on the Steering Group for the ‘ELEVATE Registry’ which is an international analysis of how well patients with the new Heartmate 3 LVAD pump are doing. I was also elected in 2016 to a national position as mechanical circulatory support lead to the CTAG Audit Group. This means I am responsible for analysing outcomes of VAD patients in the UK and reporting them to NHSBT and NHS England.
I will see any patient with heart related concerns or possible symptoms (such as chest pain, dizzy spells, blackouts, palpitations etc). For those patients with problems of shortness of breath, fluid retention / ankle swelling, or have been told of an enlarged heart, I offer an unparalleled level of expertise (given these indicate possible heart failure).
Special clinical interests: heart failure, cardiomyopathy, ventricular assist devices, transplantation and right heart catheterisation
