Dr Simon Thackray
MB BS, MD, MRCP, RAMC
I've been a cardiology consultant based in Hull for 11 years. I grew up in Hull, and it was my aim to return back to the area to work. I'm an interventional cardiologist, and have done over nearly 4,000 coronary angioplasty procedures over 16 years (the average interventionalist will do perhaps 100 per year). I routinely take on the more complex and challenging cases and am referred cases by other colleagues.
I also have an interest in high blood pressure - and set up in Hull the only renal denervation service in the North of the UK. I still have the largest experience in the UK of this technique, with over 200 cases performed in nearly 30 countries.
When I worked at Castle Hill, and later became clinical lead, I set up a number of services there including primary angioplasty for heart attacks, and renal denervation for very high blood pressure. A fresh challenge beckoned over on the south bank, and I took the position of lead consultant at NLAG NHS Trust (covering North Lincs and North East Lincs).
I have performed nearly 4,000 coronary angioplasties, for elective patients (as an outpatient procedure) and also for heart attacks. My outcomes are available on the internet, and I'm proud to have demonstrated excellent safety outcomes. About 250 of these cases have been at the Spire Hull and East Riding Hospital over the years.
For four years I was the Clinical Lead of the Cardiology Department at Hull and East Yorkshire NHS Trust. In 2015 I moved Trusts to take on a new challenge as Clinical Lead for Cardiology in the North Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Trust.
