Dr Simon Mark Greenfield
I am a highly experienced gastroenterologist practising in Hertfordshire and treat a wide range of conditions affecting the gut. I was appointed as a consultant in my current post on 1/2/1996, I have more than 23 years’ experience as a consultant.
Typical conditions that I treat include all forms of indigestion and all types of bowel problems, including constipation and diarrhoea and pancreas/bile duct problems. I am a skilled endoscopist practising all forms of endoscopy including gastroscopy, colonoscopy and ERCP. My 2017-2018 NHS data recorded 144 colonoscopies with a completion rate of 95.5%, 189 gastroscopies with a completion rate of 99%, 40 flexible sigmoidoscopies and 74 ERCPs. My Spire numbers will increase these figures by a modest amount.
While at St Thomas’ Hospital I completed my MD thesis on inflammatory bowel disease before completing my training at UCH and the Whittington Hospital, North London. Previously, I was fortunate enough to be awarded the British Society of Gastroenterology travelling fellowship to the gastrointestinal unit of the Medical University of South Carolina; this was a valuable learning experience.
When meeting a new patient my philosophy is to take a detailed history of a patient's problems and in particular to focus on any areas of diet that might be influencing symptoms. If required I may undertake a gastroscopy/colonoscopy, but I believe that this is only a small part of the treatment process and that it is important to take a holistic view when treating someone with gut symptoms. Apart from medication, dietary advice plays an important part in my treatment strategy.
I have published widely on topics such as colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, constipation and endoscopy.

I moved from North London to the rural delights of Hertfordshire in 1997. I enjoy swimming with my club on a Saturday morning and then need the rest of the weekend to recover! I am a keen golfer, but fortunately will never have to make a living out of it. I enjoy the films of Martin Scorsese, the books of John Irving, the wickets of Jimmy Anderson and the goals of DD (he will remain unidentified).
