Dr Scott Levison
BSc, MBChB, MRCP, PhD
I am a Consultant Gastroenterologist at the Manchester Royal Infirmary. I was appointed to this role in 2012.
Having gained a BSc in Medical Science at the University of St Andrews, and qualified in Medicine from the University of Manchester in 1997, I have worked in the NHS ever since. I undertook my specialist training in gastroenterology within the North West region. During this time, I gained a nationally competitive MRC Clinical Research Training Fellowship award and completed a PhD at the University of Manchester. My PhD involved the study of immune system mechanisms in the development of gut inflammation.
Through my clinical skills and research activities, I have become an expert in the field of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). I am the clinical lead for Inflammatory Bowel Disease at the Manchester Royal Infirmary. I have a wide experience of managing patients with disorders of the gastrointestinal tract (oesophagus, stomach, small bowel and colon).
I have particular interest and expertise in performing endoscopic procedures. I have performed well over 7000 endoscopic procedures (gastroscopies, colonoscopies, and sigmoidoscopies) to date (2016). In addition, I am a nationally accredited bowel cancer screening colonoscopist which requires and demonstrates a high standard of colonoscopy skills, quality and safety.
As well as performing endoscopic procedures, I have a major interest in endoscopy training. I am a member of faculty at the Mersey School of Endoscopy where I supervise on colonoscopy and basic endoscopy training courses.
Alongside my clinical work, I am an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Manchester. I have on-going basic science research activities and co-supervise several post-graduate research students. I publish original research widely, and present at national and international meetings.
I have been an investigator on many clinical trials, to look at the effect of novel drug therapies in the treatment of Inflammatory Bowel Disease. I continue to co-ordinate on-going trials, and am the luminal gastroenterology research lead at Manchester Royal Infirmary.
