I am a senior consultant dermatologist with over 22 years as a consultant in Kent, formerly at the Medway NHS Trust and now at East Kent Hospitals University Foundation Trust, based at Kent and Canterbury Hospital, Canterbury. I have extensive experience in all aspects of skin disease including skin cancer diagnosis and surgery, and management of inflammatory skin conditions including acne, eczema and psoriasis, and hundreds of other skin disorders. My general medical and specialist training was mostly undertaken in London at The Royal London, Guy's and St Bartholomew's Hospitals including two additional years of academic and research fellowship awards, plus at The Royal Liverpool Hospital. I now lead a large team at the only remaining NHS hospital based dermatology department in Kent. I am trainer and educator for trainee dermatologists, as well as for other doctors in hospital and general practice.

Skin cancer forms a major part of my work with up to 200 referrals per week of possible cancers referred to my NHS department. I am a core member of the Skin Cancer Multidisciplinary Team, and I am highly skilled in being able to differentiate between benign and malignant skin lesions in order to prevent subjecting patients to unnecessary surgery and scarring. I spend at least 8-12 hours per week performing skin surgery, mostly for skin cancer, but also removal of benign lesions where required in private practice. I am one of the few consultant dermatologists with particular interest and experience of operating on the face and head with extreme care and detail to ensure the best cosmetic outcome wherever possible. I teach these techniques to trainee specialists including the use of skin flaps and skin grafts, (moving skin across sites or from one site to another), where it is not possible to stitch the skin directly together.

The field of dermatology has more varied conditions and diagnoses than most other specialties in medicine. In addition to skin cancer work I have extensive experience and interest in the diagnosis and management of other skin diseases affecting both adults and children. Whilst dealing with commoner disorders of the skin such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis every day, I love to be challenged by the myriad of diseases that can affect the skin, being the largest organ in the body, including the many causes of hair loss, alterations in pigmentation, autoimmune disorders, allergies and infections, that I see in my patients. It gives me immense pleasure and satisfaction to help my patients understand what is causing their problem and to treat or cure it wherever possible.

Since moving to East Kent Hospitals University NHS Trust in May 2019 I have been appointed as Head of Department, a role that includes liaison with both primary and secondary care managers as well as strategic planning for the development of a new modern dermatology service utilising both traditional face to face care and virtual interaction such as use of telemedicine and video consultation. I have continued in my position as a medical educator to younger doctors, particularly within my speciality, and serve as both clinical and educational supervisor to trainee dermatologists under the Kent, Surrey and Sussex (KSS) deanery. I have been delighted to see my former trainees appointed as consultants in prestigious hospitals and organisations.

My interest in the development and use of telemedicine for dermatology (teledermatology), whereby specialist advice can be given to doctors and patients without the need for the patient coming to the hospital, started in 2001 while trying to manage the huge demand for NHS services. Subsequently I helped set up the British Society for Teledermtology in 2003 and stood as its chairman from 2006-2018 when the British Association of Dermatologists established a Teledermatology Sub-committee. In conjunction with this role, and my additional involvement in the International Society or Teledermatology where I was also its President from 2014-16, I have had a major input to research and teaching in the sub-specialty with lecturing and the organisation of at least two courses or conferences per year for many years, including at the annual conference of the British Association of Dermatologists and the World Congresses of Dermatology and Teledermatology.
