I have been a Consultant in Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery at the Welsh Institute of Dermatology, University Hospital of Wales, since 1994. I was one of the first Dermatologists in the UK to be appointed with a specific remit for skin surgery and the treatment of skin cancers. I introduced Mohs micrographic surgery to Cardiff in 1992. This is a method for removing skin tumours under microscopic control and is particularly valuable for skin tumours on the face, with ill-defined borders and around critical sites - such as the mouth, nose and eyelids and has the highest cure rates for these tumours.

I undertake general dermatology consultations, dermatological surgery and laser treatments. My specific specialty interest is in the management of skin cancer, but I also treat benign skin lesions, general skin problems and provide aesthetic treatments for the skin.

I have undertaken over 5,000 excisions of skin cancers under microscopic control since I introduced the technique to Cardiff in 1992.

I am an honorary lecturer at Cardiff University.

I established the Cardiff Teledermatology service to allow dermatology referrals to be sent electronically to the Welsh Institute of Dermatology in 2005. This teledermatology service has responded to over 20,000 electronic referrals from General Practitioners and was awarded a national NHS Wales, award for excellence in the delivery of healthcare in 2011.

In my opinion, teledermatology will play an increasing role in the timely delivery of cost-effective skin care in the future.

I wrote an editorial about methods of ensuring quality control in Mohs Micrographic surgery in the British Journal of Dermatology. I used the description of a gardener trying to remove a weed from the garden to demonstrate how Mohs micrographic surgery differs from conventional surgical excision and tissue examination - many of my patients and colleagues found this a useful analogy.
